Avoca Emergency Services

SPECIAL REPORT

In the early morning hours of October 11th, the first alarm structure box was dispatched for a reported structure fire in the 800 block of Main Street.  Within minutes of the alarm being struck, Chief VanLuvender (Avoca) arrived on scene and reported a working fire involving two buildings. The Chief assumed command and immediately struck the 2nd and 3rd alarms.

Chief VanLuvender, along with Avoca Police Officers, evacuated residents from the exposure building (located on side 4 of the main fire building), which was already involved in fire.  Chief VanLuvender requested that the first due engine (71 engine - Avoca) stretch a supply line to the rear of the involved buildings.

The 71 engine company stretched two 2 1/2" lines to protect the exposure and knock down the heavy body of fire emitting from both buildings.  The 96-1 engine (Germania) laid a line to the front of the buildings, and initiated an interior attack into the main fire building with a 2 1/2" line.  The 71 Rescue (Avoca) stretched an attack line to the 2nd floor of the main fire building.  The 93 Engine (Old Forge) was assigned to interior attack of the exposure building on side 4.

The 93 Ladder (Old Forge) and 963 Truck (Excelsior) vented the roof of both buildings before going to work assisting the engine companies on the interior.

The main body of fire was extinguished within an hour, with overhaul lasting for three more hours.  The incident is currently under investigation by the State Police Fire Marshal's office.
